Philosophy of care
Hillcrest Hayling Island offers children aged 8-14yrs, the opportunity to experience positive group living in order that they may develop empathy and a sense of belonging. The home enables children to address friendship and negotiation issues within a safe and supportive context.
Children with a wide range of Emotional and Behavioural needs, who have had little or interrupted education, who display aggressive behaviour or are persistent absconders tend to be particularly suited to Hillcrest Hayling Island.
Therapeutic care
Hillcrest Hayling Island is a full member of Charterhouse Therapeutic Communities. The home offers its own unique therapeutic approach to childcare called ‘Path’ (Parenting, Attachment & Therapeutic Healing). This approach is based on a proven theoretical means of approach which that enables young people to find their way to recovery.
The home operates within a Psychodynamic framework that helps and enables young people to both make, and maintain, meaningful psychological and emotional attachments built on mutual trust, respect and safety.
Hillcrest Hayling Island offers an emotionally comfortable safe and warm therapeutic environment, in which young people can express and explore past trauma and unresolved issues in a safe way. The staff team are skilled in therapeutic communication and management. They are trained to see and interpret all behaviour as an attempt at communication.
The home helps young people to remove problematic defence mechanisms that restrict their ability to communicate, and to trust and be nurtured. This allows young people to feel safe, and allows their primary care givers to nurture them. This, in turn, impacts on their overall growth and development.
To supplement, and support PATH, the home also provides Art Therapy, Play Therapy and Counselling.
