Becoming a foster carer
Click here to apply online to become a Fostercarer
Applicants who are interested in becoming foster carers should complete the online application form and they will then be contacted by a Hillcrest Social Worker who will make arrangements to do a home visit. During this visit the applicants interest and experience will be explored further, any questions answered and the home checked for its suitability.
Following on from this the applicants will complete a 4-day “Skills To Foster” training course. This course is designed to provide applicants with detailed information about the role of foster carers, the tasks they are expected to undertake and to learn more about the likely experiences and difficulties of children who need to be looked after.
After the course a Hillcrest Social Worker will complete an assessment. They will spend time with the applicants and their family finding out about their family history, life experiences, and their understanding of the needs of children.
Checks will be made with the police and social services; personal and employer references will be taken up and a full medical carried out, which ensures as far as possible that applicants are suitable to care for vulnerable children.
Once the report (Form F) is completed, applicants will read and sign it before the Hilllcrest fostering panel considers it. Applicants are invited to attend the panel. Approval as a foster carer is for a specific age range and number of children and length of placements for example short or long-term
