Education

Hayling IslandHillcrest schools primarily provide education for the residents of Hillcrest children's home, but on occasion can offer day placements for students identified as having social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.
Hillcrest delivers a structured programme of education tailored to each student's individual needs and taking into account their Statement of Special Educational Needs. Students are taught in small cohorts and often individually.

Students follow an academic programme consisting of literacy and numeracy sessions daily, ICT, Design & Technology, Music, Art, PE and PSHCE. In addition to this they follow vocational courses which lead to BTEC qualifications in Sports Leadership, Catering, Horticulture, Painting & Decorating, Carpentry & Joinery and Bricklaying. Students have the opportunity to apply to attend a local college for a range of vocational courses and may also undertake a work experience placement.

SandilandsMany of our students have had fragmented education and have been out of the education system for long periods of time. Hillcrest's emphasis is on providing a safe and nurturing environment that will encourage and support the students to re-engage in the process of learning. We maintain regular contact with parents and carers of all our students where appropriate, ensuring that they are kept fully informed of progress and all matters concerning their child. Verbal reports are given on a daily basis; written reports are produced annually and for Reviews.

Hillcrest schools have an excellent adult to pupil ratio and this enables us to give our children high levels of support when it is needed. Our philosophy is to give individual attention when it is required but encourage all children to be as independent as possible both in their learning and in their social and personal development. We believe that education is a partnership between the children, the home and the school.

Oathill LodgeStudents' progress is monitored as part of an ongoing process and is assessed at the end of each half term against the National Curriculum levels. All students are given a baseline assessment in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT on entry to the school and this forms the basis of their programme of study.

Hillcrest believes that the positive management of behaviour and a rewards system helps to promote positive outcomes and behaviour. Each student is given opportunities and support to manage their behaviour throughout the day. Certificates and awards are given in recognition of effort, achievement and behaviour and each week one student is awarded "student of the week". Good work is recognised and displayed and a Commendation Certificate is awarded for an outstanding day.
